"Boots"
Name: Sarah Windson (nicknamed "Boots" by her cousin, on account of her fondness for tall boots)
Age: 20
Hight: 5' 5"
Weight: 124-130ish
Gender: Female
Skin: White
Eye-colour: Brown
Appearance: Hair is brown but sun-streaked to blond. Worn with the top half tied, then that tied again with the rest to a low ponytail, which is tied once more halfway down the length. Build is slim but broad-shouldered and strong. Well muscled. Mild English accent. Clothing is simple but well made. Sapphire-blue linen shirt, close-fitting pants, charcoal-grey topcoat, and tall supple just-below-knee-length leather boots.

Job/occupation: Alcohol smuggling

Tools/equipment/weapons: Light strait-bladed Cavalry Sabre (somewhat ornate but not overly so), Howdah Pistol, three small throwing knives, and a slender boot-knife.

Skills: Very athletic. Quite skilled in moving unseen or heard. Good climber. Well-trained in swordplay and knife-fighting, as well as being a skilled had-to-hand fighter. Like her cousin Daniel, she has moderate skill in free running. BECAUSE of her cousin Daniel, she has had plenty of practice.

Personality: Boots has a strong determined nature, and is fiercely loyal, and protective of her friends. She is generally layed-back, mild-mannered, and difficult to truly anger, however she is ferocious in a fight. Despite being an out-law Boots is very moral and honour-bound, though when it comes to what other people think she has a definite devil-may-care attitude. She can be bull-headed and stubborn when she wants, but views this as a good trait. She loves to read and draw.

Background: Worked on her family's air-ship until she was 17, when her and her cousin Daniel had a slight miss-hap with the law, involving a collision with a police air-ship. Though they were completely innocent, they were to be arrested nonetheless, and the prison had a nasty reputation. They fled arrest, and so were unable to get regular LEGAL work. Luckily, their less-than-respectable Uncle got them work in the alcohol-smuggling trade.

Is a quick talker, but gets nervous when he has to lie or does not know all the facts. Good buisnes man. (And finally what seems to be his most valuable skill) Is able to make friends nearly anywhere and everywhere

bio: Daniel was born into a family of airmen and learned how to fly by the time he was twelve. Unfortunately him and his cousin had a slight miss-hap with the law, involving a collision with a police air-ship. Though they were completely innocent, they were to be arrested nonetheless, and the prison had a nasty reputation. They fled arrest, and so were unable to get regular LEGAL work. Luckily, their less-than-respectable Uncle got them work in the alcohol-smuggling trade.

Name: Haruki Masanori
Nicknames: Haru, lazy-samurai
Age: 20
Height: 5'11"
weight: 185
Gender: Male
Skin: Asian Tanned
Appearance: dressed in a Gi with a straw hat at times. sandals and a belt. Black hair tied to a ponytail with long sideburns and a small beard. mostly tall but well built. He has a Nihoto (sword) on his left side, a daggar by his right leg and a Winchester Lever Action rifle slung on his back.

Job: Comic relief. Seriously. I just copy and pasted this from the previous roleplay.

Home/Base: Wherever he finds comfy and hopefully free.

Tools/equipment: A standard Nihoto sheathed. stainless steel and made by his former master. An engraved Winchester Lever-action rifle with a shortened barrel and engravings in the wood. His dagger on his leg used normally for Seppuku, is used in tight situations rather than splitting his own insides apart.

Bio: fell asleep one day on his boat and was mistaken as luggage for an airship. He tends to do this... Very often but really doesn't care to go back to Japan. He was trained under well renowned teachers in Kido, Jujitsu and Karate but was always a slacker. He was born in a wealthy family but never bothered to care for riches either.

One paragraph of how they would describe themselves:

Look, hoor, I’m just a cynical, optimistic drunkard who can drink himself to oblivion and back again. I like my booze and I like my plane, and as long as you don’t mess with them you’ll be fine. Oh, and don’t pick on the little guy, because if you do, I’ve got a bullet with your name on it…

Why? Because.
If they were changed would they be the same person, why/why not: No, he wouldn’t. Many of these things form WHO he is, his kindness, his gentleness, his willingness to get “down to level” with people.
Would changing of number 1 make them more happy? Why/why not: No. As much as he SAYS he hates his family, he really doesn’t – just their business.

Interaction with other people:

How do they relate to others: He’s a good listener and understands people, even if he’s a bit crazy.
How are they perceived by strangers: As either a very kind, lovely person or raging drunk, depending on levels of inebriation. They always see him as a bit loopy, though.
Friends: Anyone and everyone! Unless you’re out to hurt people. Then you’re dead.
Wife/husband/lover: Dead.
First impression of the char: Talkative drunk who’s a bit crazy. “A madman with a rifle and a pilot’s license.”
why? He’s got a very honest face. =D
What happens to change this perception: People get to know him.
What do people like most about this char: His sense of humor
What do they dislike most about them: His temper

Goals:

Immediate: Money… booze… stay away from Dad… Oooh! Puzzle!
Long term: None really at the moment. Vague asperations to work against the trade, but… booze…
How do they plan to accomplish them: Ohh, money? BOOZE.
How will others be affected by this: They get frustrated by it, caught up in it, in trouble with his family. People close to him tend to die. Or be threatened into betraying him. (He doesn’t blame them.)

Problems/Crisis:

How do they react in a crisis: He’s very good in a crisis, very calm and assertive in his crazy way. He tends to solve problems by being sudden and crazy and geniuslike, as per usual.
How do they face problems: Personal problems? He runs away.
Kind of problems they usually run into: Usually ones involving other people so he can seem very insane and drunk in his problem-solving.
How they react to new problems: With joy. He loves puzzles.
How they react to change: Change is a part of his life. He doesn’t react any more or less to it than with anything else.

General:

Favorite clothing, why: Anything comfortable, usually boots, leather trousers, and a loose tunic.
Least favorite, why: Anything tight and fancy and overdone. (I.E. Velvet suits.) He’s worn enough of them in his life to be sure he hates it.
Jewelry: An earring and a solid bronze bracelet with a fish pendant.
Other accessories: His rifle, his tweed flat cap, and his butterfly knife are usually always with him. He’s somewhat attached to the hat.
Drives: A horse?
Where do they live: Everywhere
Where do they want to live: He’d like to move back to Ireland,
but that’s kind of off-limits because he can’t stay there long without someone recognizing him.
Spending habits, why: He tends to spend freely because he never learned how to budget…
What do they do too much of, why: He drinks WAY too much, mostly to forget.
Most prized possession, why: His hat. He’s very attached to the hat. It’s the one gift his mother gave him before she died, saying that he’d grow into it… and he did.
Most important person in their life before story starts, why: His father. He’d never admit it, but his universe circles around his father – and trying to get away from him.
How do they spend the week just before the story starts: Drinking himself into oblivion in a tiny bar somewhere because he almost got a friend killed because he was him.

My reasoning: The longer the character sheet, the more you know about a character. The more you know about a character, the more convincingly you can play him/her. The more convincingly you can play him/her, the happier you shall be! Also, it's the little things that bring a character to life. It's not what they look like or that they had some tragic past, it's figuring out their motivations, their tiny habits, their quirks. A lot of times, I don't know anything except a vague idea until I start a character sheet. Then a character comes alive in my head!

Ah, I find I prefer making vaguer character sheets myself, as it keeps me from unintentionally limiting my character's moods based on pre-determined facts, and feels more natural. It also leaves more surprises for the reader.

Haha, well... I find that my character evolves beyond the sheets no matter what I do, but the more detailed the sheet, the stronger base my character has. I also am not tempted to use a character as a stand-in for myself, which is a cardinal sin and should never, ever, ever be done because it makes for very annoying characters known as Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus. I don't know exactly how my character will react to EVERY situation, but I can assume how he would react because I've got a solid past for him. See my point? I can't limit my character's moods because he's a multifaceted character. The only way you can limit your character's moods with a sheet is to strictly stick to the sheet - which I don't.

Mr.Methodical, I made up that character name from the very top of my head. But if anything, the name Vera is in my head because I just read, And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie.

Long character sheets are very useful, but mostly to the writer. For instance, if you put that much back round into a story, the reader might fall asleep.
